CNS系論文フォーマット比較と修正

CNSとは

自然科学系のジャーナルのトップ３といえば、

  • Cell　(IF 38.6 @2020)
  • Nature (IF 42.8 @2020)
  • Science (IF 41.8 @2020)

この3つの頭文字をとってCNSと呼ばれます。
何をもってトップというかというと、インパクトファクター（IF）です。
IFとは、去年その雑誌に載った論文が翌年までに何本引用されたかを表したもので、どれだけ読まれたから、という指数です。IFが高ければいいというわけではありませんが、重要な指標にはなります。ちなみにMDPIがcellsというjournalを出していますがCellとは別です。

CNSの姉妹紙（生命医学系）

CNS系とタイトルで評したのは、CNSには姉妹紙と呼ばれる関連誌が数多く存在するからです。Natureとnatureの姉妹紙はフォーマットも大体一緒なので、Natureにrejectされたら次は姉妹紙に出してみるのも大いにアリです。

それ以外に、CNSにフォーマットを変換して送ることもよく行われます。例えば、Nnatureはダメだったけど次はScienceに送ってみよう、といった具合です。その場合、書くjournalが指定しているフォーマットにある程度修正する必要があります。最初の提出はそれほど厳密ではありませんが、Science のeditorがnatureフォーマットの原稿を受け取ったら、あまり気分が良くないですよね？ここは最低限の礼儀としてフォーマット編集をします。

基本的なtemplate (Article 形式)

基本的にどのjournalにも必要とされる項目はさほど変わりません。
大体以下のような順番になります。
Methodの位置などはjournalごとに異なりますが、最初のsubmittは以下のような流れで作成します。
細かいところは各journalのfor authorsを読みます。

  • Results (Introduction, Discussion, Summaryを含む)

Figureはexport形式やフォントの指定などがあるので、作成する前に要チェックです。
illustratorで作成する際、パネルや文字を別レイヤーにしておくと修正が楽です。
FigureのフォントはHelvetica系（Arialなど）にしておけばまず間違いないです。

Formatを変更しなくてはならなくなった場合チェックすべき主な点

まず必ず確認が必要になるのは以下の項目です。 * 字数制限 * FigやTableの数の制限 * Fig,Tableの引用の表記 * Referenceの表記（Data Baseで管理してい置くと簡単に変更可能）

そのほか細かいところは多々ありますが、個別に見ていきます。

Nature Article format の特徴
  • Figureのタイル文字が小文字でかっこなし　(ex .a)
  • 印刷物として5ページ以内(Refを含む)
  • 字数制限にReferences, title, author list and acknowledgementsは入らない
  • summary paragraph（引用あり, ~200 words）からスタート1
  • 3-4 つのFigures
  • 約30-50のrefenrence list

Sicence Research Article format の特徴
  • 字数制限4500 words (references, notes and captions を含む、印刷物のT~5 pages 相当)
  • Fig とTable で6つまで
  • Reference は約40
  • Methodsはsupplementary materialに記載
  • Abstractは125 wordまで
  • One Sentence Summary( 125 characters)がある
  • template word fileがある。2 ちなみにScienceにはReserch Aritlcels for online presentationというものもあります。3
    ReportやReviewに関しては御本家を参照のこと。

ありがたいことにScienceはwordフォーマットがある(Sapplementary materialもテンプレートがある)ので、それをダウンロードして編集していけばいいです。
残体の流れは以下のようになっています

Cellの特徴
  • Abstractの代わりに~150 worsのSummaryがある
  • Keywords (10個まで)を記載
  • Graphical Abstract(1枚絵で本文全t内を説明する図)がある
  • 通常のMethodの代わりに、STAR☆Methodsという形式を指定しており、これに従ってTableやMethodを作成する必要があります。正直この作成は結構骨が折れます。
  • Figure は最大7つまで
  • Supplemental material のFigの数は本文中と同じ数まで,その他（tableやvideo）を含め（本文中のFigとTableの数）x 2までの制限あり
  • Figureのregend にSuppremental materialとの関連を記載する

ただし、最初からこれら全部を用意しなくても大丈夫です。
Graphical AbstractやStar☆Methodsはacceptされてからでよいです。

逆に守らなければいけないのは、字数制限と図の数です。

まとめると、最初の投稿で意識すべきは

  • Figureの数とregendの記載方法
  • Abstract と本文の字数制限

といったあたりです。とくにSupplemental の数の制限はNatreやScienceにはないので要注意です。

FigureやSpplementalの図が別ファイルで提出せよとの指定が書かれていますが4、最初の投稿ではFigureも1枚にまとめてよいのではと思います。PIはそれでも受け取ってもらえたそうです。

  3. Science also accepts a few Research Articles for online presentation. These are expected to present significant research results that cannot be fully presented in the print format and merit the extra length and attention provided by this presentation. The cover letter should indicate why the additional length is merited. These can be up to 8000 words and include methods, additional figures and potentially videos, as part of the main article. Additional supplementary materials which include information needed to support the paper’s conclusions, are allowed. The full text will be included in all digital versions of Science, and a structured abstract will be included in the print version. A pdf of the full article can be downloaded.↩
